Birching Not Supported
(N.Z. freit Association) ROTORUA, July 27. Birching as a penalty for crimes of violence wag not supported by the national conference of the Federation of 'Country Women’s Institutes i last week. The immediate past president of the federation, Mrs E. D. Holt, said in Rotorua today that a remit calling fot birching for crimes of violence had been replaced by an amendment she had drafted. The amendment asked that the federation urge the Minister of Justice to make the penalties for crimes of violence so severe as to act as a deterrent. Mrs Holt, the wife of the president of the National Party, said the amendment, not the remit, was passed by a majority of 840 to 10.
