Hulme Can-Am Leader Again

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)

EDMONTON (Alberta). D. Hulme (New Zealand) beat P. Gethin (England), also in a McLaren BD, in the Klondike 2000 CanadianAmerican Challenge Cup race on Sunday.

Hulme led from start to finish in the race, the fourth in the 11-race Can-Am series, and won $10,715. His fastest lap was the seventy-third, which he made in 1:23.9 seconds or 108.42 m.p.h. The 36-year-old New Zealander’s victory was his second this year and his third successive Klondike 200 win. It moved him into first place in the series standings with 52 points, 10 more than D. Gurney (California), who has had to withdraw from the McLaren team.

(New Zealand) retired the car—bought by local businessmen from G. Eaton—when he lost pressure in one cylinder. It was the fourth such incident for the car this season.

Only 13 of the 22 starters finished as mechanical problems took their toll. Hulme and Gethin were the only drivers to finish 80 laps of the 2.5-mile circuit. L. Motschenbacher (United States) was third in a McLaren. R. Brown (United States) was fourth in a McLaren, and D. Causey (United States) fifth in a Lola. Hulme’s victory was made even more satisfying by the fact that his hands, not yet recovered from serious burns received during practice for the Indianapolis 500, did not bother him as much as expected. A big disappointment to the 38,500 spectators was the failure of the Spirit of Edmonton to finish. G. Lawrence
