ONE-MAN SHOW
Rodney Newton-Broad, a 1968 sculpture graduate from , the University of Canterbury . School of Art is bolding his first one-man exhibition of sculpture and drawing in the ' Mezzanine gallery at the Canterbury Society of Arts His work has been seen , previously in Christchurch in group exhibitions in 1968 and 1969 but so far has failed to gain the support it deserves. Newton-Broad has used the lost wax process to produce six bronzes and one brass that are outstanding for the mas tery he has achieved in the field of casting alone, but his work goes far beyond just technical accomplishment. His work is basically abstract but it does evoke feelings of things seen, known and understood in the contemporary and in the historic world. But perhaps NewtonBroad’s most outstanding achievement as a sculptor lies in his ability to use the space around each work as an integral part of it His drawings are more personal statements meant for himself rather than for the world. The exhibition will remain open until August 10. —G.T.M.
