Pollution Inquiry
The authorities declared the beaches of Rome’s lido safe for bathing yesterday after a week-long official inquiry into pollution. But the inquiry showed that the level of pollution in the River Tiber was dangerously high, and drew attention to a bylaw already in force, forbidding swimming in the river. —Rome, July 27.
