Road Toll Up

Twenty-two persons were killed in road accidents in Christchurch in the first six months of 1970 and there have been another three deaths this month.

In the first six months of 1969, 11 were killed and the total for the year was 24.

These figures are shown on a pin-studded map in the drivers’ room of the St John Ambulance Association. The map also shows a major change in where Injury accidents occur.

The pins show that about half the Injury accidents occur within the four avenues.

Whereas in other years the rows of pins reaching out from the city picked out the main accesses to the central area, the pins for the first six months of this year are scattered through suburban streets. -Drivers say they are being called to many more injury accidents than previously on what were quiet suburban streets.

They also soy that in an increasing number of accidents two and more persons are being injured and that many of these accidents occur between 10.30 p.m. and 11 p.m. In the first six months of this year the drivers have attended 30 more accidents in which 55 more persons have been injured, compared with the same period of 1969.
