PAYROLL TAX
Protest By League
The Christchurch Central electoral branch of the New Zealand Social Credit Political League has joined the protests against payroll tax. The branch unanimously decided at a meeting that a letter be sent to the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) protesting against the levying of the payroll tax oh local authorities, in particular the Christchurch Transport Board and other public services running at a loss and dependent on subsidies. “It occurred to us that if you were really concerned with the payroll tax being absorbed and not passed bh,” the letter says, "then no-one would know better than a man of your experience that such an additional tax can Only be absorbed by trading concerns which already show a profit.” Because local authority boards were subsidised by central government through taxpayers and local government, through ratepayers, payroll tax brought about a situation where ratepayers subsidised their tax-payments and vice-versa.
