Giants No More
Unbeaten for five years, the All Blacks embarked on their present tour of South Africa as the giants of the Rugby world. Saturday’s defeat at Pretoria has reduced them to the stature of mere mortals. For the Springboks, Saturday’s result should restore the morale of a side which could do no better than draw in any of its tests in the recent tour of the British Isles. New Zealanders can be proud that their team was described by the referee as “ the cleanest to “ tour South Africa since 1945 Now the AU Blacks have two weeks to iron out their problems, especially in forward play, before the second test at Cape Town. Whatever the outcome of the remaining three tests, the Springboks have done themselves—and the Rugby code—a great service in proving that the All Blacks are not invincible.
