Melbourne Weights

(N.Z. Press Association)

MELBOURNE. The New Zealand stayer, Il Tempo, was given top weight of 9-10 for the Melbourne Cup when handicaps for the event were declared yesterday. Il Tempo gives 51b to Divide and Rule in the Melbourne Cup but Divide and Rule is topweight with 9-6 in the Caulfield Cup. Divide and Rule is unlikely to contest either Spring race. He is expected to go to the United States.

The handicapper is giving nothing away to the New Zealand contingent in either race. They are weighted right up to their best New Zealand form. The third top-weight in the Melbourne Cup is the Americanowned, New Zealand-bred three-year-old, Piko. He is asked to carry 9-1 in the Caulfield Cup and only one pound less in the Melbourne Cup. Il Tempo’s cup weight represents four pounds more than weight-for-age and is three pounds more than joint topweights, Rain Lover and General Command, carried in the cup last year.

Apart from Galilee, with 10-0 in 1967 and 10-1 in 1968. 11 Tempo has received more weight in the cup than any horse since Tulloch in 1961.
