New Brighton deservedly beat Suburbs in a bright display at Jellicoe Park. With its forwards winningj numerous rucks and line-outs, the New Brighton backs carved 1 large holes in the Suburbs defence and only a lack of speed in the three-quarters stopped New Brighton from winning by a bigger margin. Dickson, Gearry and Legge continually beat their markers. Gearry, promoted from senior reserve, had a fine debut in senior Rugby, his handling was safe and his goal kicking accurate. Legge, playing at second fiveeighths. was brilliant and made the breaks for three of the four tries scored by New Brighton. K. Tanner, E. Leask and J. Wilkens played well in the New
Brighton forwards, although the i, pack did suffer through the abI sence of I. Penrose. G. Tanner . and D. Commons. Suburbs played solidly but ■lack of purposeful tackling cost it dearly. Davis was efficient behind the scrum, but on the t day was outplayed by Dickson. ' S. Cron, W. Meredith and W. 'Mason did a lot of work in the , i rucks and mauls. Referee: Mr K. Columbus. .1
