Miss Jane Spielman, who authorities believe was involved in the mysterious explosion in a house in Greenwich Village that led to a full scale Federal investigation into the Weatherman radicals—a branch of the Students for a Democratic Society organisation—surrendered yesterday to face bombing conspiracy charges.
Miss Spielman, aged 23, was the fifth of 13 alleged Weathermen named in an indictment on Thursday by a Federal grand jury in Detroit to be placed in Federal custody. A nation-wide search is under way for the other eight. A short, stocky girl with long dark hair, Miss Spielman appeared at F. 8.1. headquarters with her lawyer, Mr William Crain. She was taken handcuffed to a district court for arraignment. Judge Edward Weinfield released Miss Spielman in SUSIO.OOO personal recognisance bail, pending the hearing on Tuesday, when she will have to post a SUS 500 cash bond to remain free.
Outside the courtroom, Miss Spielman, who attended the University of Chicago for four years blit left without a de-
gree and is unemployed, described the indictments as “yet another desperate attempt by the Federal Govern-ment—Nixon-Mitchell regime —to catch those people they feel are attacking the United States Government, those members of the Weatherman faction. “It doesn’t seem to me that it is working,” she added.
Mr Crain, who also is attorney to a group of Black Panthers accused of a New York city bomb plot, denied that Miss Spielman had any connection with the Greenwich Village explosion. “She was miles away from the house on that day—March 6th,” he said. He will seek to have the warrant issued for her in Detroit quashed.
The Weathermen were accused of conspiring to destroy property, kill and injure people with bombings in New York, Chicago, Detroit and Berkeley, California. Miss Spielman, who lives in New York but originally came from Miami, was accused also of being present at the house in Greenwich Village where bombs were being assembled. The house was dei stroyed on March 6 by an | apparently accidental explosion which killed three Weathermen.
