Staying High Up

This combination of a parachute and a hot air balloon has been devised by the United States Air Force as a high altitude escape system for pilots who bail out over enemy territory. A small propane gas burner, carried in a tank on the pilot’s back, forces hot air into the balloon to provide an immediate lift.

When fully developed the system will allow pilots to stay at a safe altitude while awaiting air rescue.
