PAPANUI REPLY
Criticism Of Minister
The Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys) showed a “complete lack of understanding” of the Post Primary Teachers' Association salary claims, the staff of the Papanui High School said yesterday in a telegram sent to Mr Taiboys after a special staff meeting. The staff had met to consider statements made in Dunedin on Thursday by Mr Taiboys when he was reported as saying that teachers could not be equated with doctors and dentists because different skills were required. ‘To recruit and retain staff in secondary schools it is urgent that relativity with other occupations be established for people of similar qualifications,” the telegram to the Minister said. "The different skills required for different professions are quite irrelevant. Some statement indicating your understanding of the situation is essential.”
