World War I Artist Dead
(N.Z. Press Association? WELLINGTON, July 17. One of New Zealand’s bestknown and accomplished landscape painters of the period 1930-1950, Mr Nugent Herman Welch, died in the Wellington Hospital yesterday. He was 88. Mr Welch, an official war artist with the Ist N.Z.E.F. in 1918 and 1919, was born in Akaroa, the son of a surveyor who was also a part-time painter and co-founder of the Otago Art School. In 1908, Mr Welch became New Zealand’s first professional full-time artist. He was a life member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and helped promote the original plans for the present National Art Gallery.
Frost—Rangiora had its heaviest frost of the winter yesterday. Mr G. C. Beattie, who takes the official readings, recorded 13.6 degrees.
