Atlantic Silver Plough Finals
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 17. The , Atlantic Silver Plough competition finals began today at Momona, 17 miles from Dunedin, in pleasant, sunny weather after a sharp frost. The 22 competitors were welcomed by the general manager of Atlantic Oil (Mr R. F. Blackmore) before parading to their plots behind the John McGlashan College pipe band. Ploughing was started on the stubble at noon, with a Very light signal. Competitors found conditions to their liking, and not too slippery after the frost had thawed. There was a high standard of ploughing, according to the judges, with some firstclass plots, although some were showing too much coul-ter-face.
A three-times winner, Mr S. M. Allison (Milton), who is judging this year, said that the plots were reasonably even and provided a good test The standard of ploughing was higher than he expected.
There was a large public attendance for a week day. Many more are expected tomorrow to see the grassland ploughing, and to watch a full programme of entertainment.
With the introduction of two days of ploughing, no points are announced until the- grassland plots are completed tomorrow afternoon. The winner who will receive his award from Mr
A. D. Dick, Under-Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture will represent New Zealand at the world ploughing finals in Denmark in September.
