1 In 8 Pupils Is Maori
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 16. One in eight pupils in New Zealand schools is Maori, according to the Education Department
In its annual report tabled in Parliament today, the department estimates that the Maori pupil population has reached 85,000. “The increase in the number of Maori pupils is particularly noticeable in secondary schools,” the report says. “This number has doubled in the last decade, and will double again before the end of the 19705." But the report noted the number at primary level was likely to stability at about 70,000 for the next few years. “It is heartening to note that although the number of Maori pupils in the sixth form is still small, it has quadrupled during the last 10 years, and the number in the fifth form has increased by two and a half times,” the report said.
