POLLUTION IN CHCH
“Health Being Affected”
Air pollution in Christchurch had passed the level at which the health of people I was affected, the past president of the New Zealand Clean Air Society (Mr I. R. Densem) said yesterday. “At present a quarter of a million local citizens are living in a seriously polluted [environment and the majority accept this air pollu- | tion as the normal winter conditions,” he said in a letter to “The Press.”
“According to a survey by the society 26,000 citizens will suffer bronchial trouble this winter. The society has 180 technical papers and references which confirm or support the co-relation of polluted air and bronchitis. “Why is there flo positive action to alleviate the situation? Is central government incompetent, is local government at fault, is apathy of citizens too strong, or can the intelligence of a quarter of a million people be questioned?” Mr Densem asked.
