Rhodesian Budget
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SALISBURY, July 17. Rhodesia’s balance of payments levelled out last year after two successive years of large deficits, the Minister of Finance (Mr John Wrathall) announced yesterday. Mr Wrathall, presenting the Budget to Parliament, said that Rhodesian exports last year had increased by 20 per cent, but imports had dropped. Mr Wrathall admitted a sRhl9m tobacco loss because of sanctions, but emphasised that Rhodesia’s
economy was otherwise sound. He also said that although export earnings had risen sharply, the Rhodesian balance of payments would be under strain during the next 18 months mainly because of a poor agricultural season. Mr Wrathall warned farmers that they would have to learn to stand on then 1 own feet There was a limit to the amount of support the Government could give agriculture in general, and the tobacco industry in particular. The Budget which was one of little change generally, was aimed at recruiting the technically skilled and professional men the country needs.
