Retreat In Cambodia
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PHNOM PENH, July 16.
Crack American-trained Cambodian troops ran out of ammunition and retreated today from the recaptured mountain garrison of Kiri Rom after six days of counterattacks by the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese.
A military spokesman said that the Cambodians suffered fairly heavy losses before being forced to withdraw.
The Associated Press says the indications are that the Cambodians lost more than 200 killed, wounded and missing in the fighting, 55 miles south-west of Phnom Penh. A Cambodian Government spokesman said the troops were forced to withdraw. "We are short of ammunition,” he explained. "Our soldiers resisted to the last bullet Because Kiri Rom is a hill, it is very difficult to climb, and each of our soldiers can only bring a limited quantity of ammunition.”
A U.P'.I. photographer, Kent Potter, reports from the scene that 10 Cambodian soldiers were killed and 49 were wounded yesterday in an assault against the guerrilla-held positions in Kiri Rom.
