Lincoln Student Building
A new three-storey stud- I ent union building, costing ll' $292,000, will he built at Lincoln College. The college has accepted a tender of this figure from Rea Enterprises, of Christchurch, the work being expected to take about a year, said Mr H. N. M. Harvey, the college building officer. The new building of 21,000 sq. ft, would be large enough to cope with foreseeable increases in enrolment, as long as the college remained an agricultural institution, Mr Harvey said.
Incorporated in the build ng will be student union administration facilities, a cafe teria and common room, and a large hall. “The plan can be thought of in two halves," said Mr Harvey. “The first half is the hall, and the second the student accommodation. When the plan was first envisaged, the idea was to have student facilities separate from the hall.
However, it was decided that the funds raised for the hall would be added to those beingcollected for the other
facilities. Money for the hall project had been accumulated for some considerable time by former students and friends of the college, he said. The ground floor of the new building will be occupied by a student cafeteria and common room, and will adjoin the college’s kitchen. The hall will cover the entire floor area of the first floor, with, the student administration rooms, above that in balcony form,' covering about half the area. The hall will be named the
W H. Gillespie Hall, after a former chairman of the board of governors. It will be fitted with a stage, and sophisticated audio-visual equipment
An unusual feature of the furnishings will be certain furniture made from 90-year-old oaks that have been cleared from the site. The oaks were milled on the instructions of Mr Harvey, but in what form they will appear in the building has not yet been decided.
