U.S. Birth-control Plan For Pets
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PHILADELPHIA, July 16. The Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, swamped every year with 40,000 stray cats and dogs, has announced plans for a birth-control programme for pets.
There are 90 million dogs < and cats in the United States, | more than 15 million of the dogs and 25 million cats homeless. ’ s One S.P.C.A. official esti- ! mates that 10,000 dogs and ,
cats are born each hour in the United States. To check the pet explo-j sion, the Pennsylvania! S.P.C.A. is requiring people' who adopt female dogs and cats to have their animals
neutered. Beginning on July 20, the society will require a deposit of SUS2O for dogs and SUSIS for cats, from those who adopt animals, to be refunded on presentation of a veterinarian’s spaying certificate.
“The society will take animals back from those who don’t comply,” said Mr Leroy Ellis, manager-secretary of the society. “It’s the only solution. Even though we : have been placing nearly 1000 pets a month in new homes, we cannot keep up with the ever-increasing influx of stray and unwanted animals. “There just aren’t enough new homes. We put to death thousands of animals every month. They include healthy animals as well as strays which are injured, sick of bad-tempered.”
