“Goitre may become prevalent again if we do not emphasise the importance of using iodised salt,” said the national president of Home Science Alumnae (Mrs Dawn Ibbotson) in Christchurch recently.
Speaking at a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the alumnae, Mrs Ibbotson said that younger people were not fully aware ’of the need for using iodised salt everyday to prevent goitre. “It is the most convenient way of taking iodine into our systems.” she said. “Common salt is cheaper, so people are immediately attracted to it,” she said, “but we must make the public, particularly the housewives, aware of the benefits of the iodised variety.” The alumnae will launch an extensive publicity campaign on the benefits of using iodised salt
