NEW RACE

A new feature at the Benson and Hedges 500 saloon race meeting set down for August 30 will be the “Golden 100” a race open both to locallyassembled and built-up production saloons. The only condition is that there must be at least 10 examples of any particular model in the country. Thus very fast saloons which are not eligible for the main production-car race because they are not locally-assembled will be able to compete in the shorter event. This throws the event open for the entry of such models as the Holden Monaro, the Holden Torana, the Ford Falcon GT, the Jaguar XJ6, the B.M.W. 2800, the Mercedes 280, the Lotus Cortina, the Escort T.C., and others. A full entry of 40 cars is expected for the race, and there will be three classes: up to 1300 c.c., 1301 c.c. to 2500 c.c., and more than 2501 c.c. As its name suggests, the race will be over 100 miles.

In the main 500-mile pro-duction-car race, several entrants are expected to be out to beat the VauxhalL Victor 3.3-litre models, i which won the race in 1968 and 1969. Last year V 8 Chrysler Valiants shared second place, and a Fiat 125 was fourth. Cars entered in the main! event must be completely; standard, and at least 200 examples of each model must have been built in this country. It is believed that entries this year may

include several Rover 2000 T.C. saloons, and victory is expected to be disputed by the Victors, Valiants, Fiat 1255, and Rovers.
