MARINE DEPT
Publication Of
History
A history of the Marine Department from its beginnings in 1866 has been published recently to mark the department’s centenary. Covering all aspects of the department’s work—from marine surveys to fisheries control and from the provision of lighthouses, beacons, and other navigational aids to the supervision of Government vessels—the 150-page book is fully illustrated and has several appendices. It has been written, by Mr E. R. Martin, who retired in 1965 after 41 years service with the department, during which time he was associated with the work of almost all its branches. Chapter Headings
The work covers a general history of the department and its heads in two chapters, before dealing specifically with the individual aspects of the department’s activities. Among the headings for these chapters are shipping legislation, training and examining marine crews, shipping casualties, ship building and ship repairs in New Zealand, light dues and lighthouses, castaway depots, the history of the Bluff-Stewart Island ferry service, coastal surveys, harbours, boiler and machinery safety, and fisheries.
The book has been printed by the Government Printing Office for the department.
