Art Discovery In London
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 15. The National Gallery in London has announced the discovery of an original painting by the Italian Renaissance master, Raphael, that is believed to be worth more than £lm. For 146 years, the painting, a portrait of the sixteenth century Pope, Julius 11, has hung in relative obscurity in the gallery, having been considered by experts to be a copy of the original in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. But after cleaning earlier this year, and x-ray examinations of both portraits, the experts have concluded that the London painting pre-dates its Italian counterpart by at least a few weeks.
