58 University “Blues”

The presentation of the 1970 University of Canterbury sports ’’Blues” will be combined this year with a new University sportsman and sportswoman of the year award, at a special dinner on July 24.

Since 1963, it has been customary for the awards to be presented at a function, but the high expenses involved had caused considerable difficulty. Members of the University of Canterbury Students' Association. following the example of their Auckland counterparts, decided to approach Benson and Hedges for sponsorship. The firm offered to subsidise the dinner and to present an award for the outstanding university sportsman and sportswoman. Speakers at this year’s dinner will be New Zealand cricket captain, G. T. Dowling, who will present Blues to 58 sportsmen and sportswomen. Blues for the 1969 winter season and 1970 summer season have been awarded to: Rowing (1970): J. Harding, A. Winwood, D. Jack, G.
