Russian Missiles

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 12. A Pentagon spokesman has declined to comment on a report that the Soviet Union may now have as many as 300 multiple-war-head SS9 missiles operational or under construction. The Defence Secretary (Mr Melvin Laird) told a press conference on Thursday that Moscow was pressing ahead with SS9 deployment, but gave no figures on the numbers of missiles. In testimony to Congress in May, Mr Laird said that the Russians had 220 SS9s operational and 60 under construction.

The “Washington Post” reported today that new Intelligence received has established the fact of additional SS9 deployment between June 24 and July 8— after the mid-April start of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Russians, in Vienna. The Administration has cited the SS9 build-up as one of the reasons for asking Congress to provide additional funds to expand the United States anti-ballistic-missile system.
