Strikes
Sir, —My congratulations to j the Government for getting ■ tough with striking unions and their leaders as they cause stoppages and strikes over very trivial matters. Many caught up in these unions are true Kiwis and do not wish to strike, and many cannot afford it Once unions were ' the workers’ friend, but to-ij day they are a disturbing!; force in the country. Mr!; Skinner said: “You cannot ’ force men to work.” He for-! 1 got to add that on the other - hand men should not be } forced to strike. The public are getting very impatient!? with the constant “state of ’ strike” and the inconvenience J caused by it. and many see ! that the greed of a section of • the country's workers is caus- - ing our good times to cease. c Building has been priced al- 1 most out of existence. Our ' exports are becoming too 1 costly for overseas trade and • we are heading for a very ® lean time. Wages should be *■ reduced, not raised.—Yours, e etc.. HOUSEWIFE, t July 9, 1971 ’ c
Sir, These continual c strikes are getting on all our nerves. Strikers never seem I to consider whether employers can afford to pay still! jnore wages, or whether their n actions will put the country j n bankrupt. The only question if seems to be, would I like to a handle more money? Never f mind inconvenience to the g public. I suggests that all a strikers and their wives be s forced to wear a conspicuous 0 badge, and that they be re- ■; fused all amenities such as be- c ing served in shops, travelling on buses, and so forth. Per- p haps this retaliation would •( teach them a lesson. Further- t) more, we know that a man ( j may withhold his labour if he f| wishes. But if he does ' not S| want his job he has no right 0 whatever to stop someone else j, doing it—Yours, etc., SWEET REASON. July 9, 1970.
