Witch Hazel

The witch hazel, Hamamellis mollis, and its various cultivars, is still a verp popular, dependable, hardy win-ter-flowering shrub. Its fragrant strap-like flowers, with curled petals, open well before the greyish green leaves appear.

Later pear-shaped fruit • adorn the branches. The species has yellow flowers. There ■ are newer cultivars which ■ produce orange, red or copi pery-eoloured inflorescence. (All grow well over 6ft in height and at least sft in diameter eventually).
