FURNITURE VAN FIRE

A large, articulated furniture van belonging to Kirby’s Carriers, Ltd, caught alight in Brighton Street, Kaikoura, at 6.30 p.m. yesterday. The Kaikoura Volunteer Fire Brigade was called and soon had the fire under control. The full load of furniture was undamaged. The driver had stopped the van in Brighton Street when he smelt burning rubber. He found that the right rear dual wheels had caught alight, apparently after the brakes had seized.
