Shop Assistants Want Pay Rise
The Shop Assistants’ Employees’ Association is seeking an interim wage increase to restore the relative position with other pay scales that exisited when the present award was agreed on in October last year
The award—the General Retail Shop Assistants’ Award —does not expire until April, 1971. However, the secretary of the association (Mr G. S. Scoones) said in Christchurch yesterday that it had become obvious that through wagerises in other sectors of industry—by both award tiations and direct approa- [ ches to employers—the rates agreed upon last year were completely out of date. “The relative position which applied at that time no longer' exists," said Mr Scoones. “Although the general re ! tail award does not expire until next year, the associa-l
• tion has asked for a meeting I with representatives of the . Retailers' Federation to negotiate the restoration of this f position. “The association is pleased i that, with the co-operation of > the federation, this meeting ■ will take place on July 27. it • is hoped that an agreement • will be reached that will help ■ishop assistants until their i award is next negotiated." )
