National Angus Show At Dannevirke

(From Our Own Reporter) DANNEVIRKE, July 8. A yearling offered on account of J. L. Duncan, of Hastings, fetched top price of $4500 at the National Angus Show and sale of led bulls al Dannevirke today. After bidding had opened at $lOOO, he was secured by McGaffin Farm,. Ltd (Els thorpe) for $4500. The bull, Purser 14th of Elgin, had not been placed in the show before the sale. Another yearling—the only autumn born beast in the sale —fetched $3200. Also offered on account of J. L. Duncan,' he fell to the bid of Dalgety, Ltd. of Melbourne, acting for D. Sunderman. In spite of some interest from Australian buyers or their agents, few high prices were paid.

As usual, buyers were selective. From an entry of 34 two-year-olds. 17 were sold at auction for 922,700 to average $1335. and only 10 «of 33 yearlings were sold in the ring for 918,300. an average of 91830

Australian buyers or their agents laid out 917.500 to secure 10 lots. The feature df the show was the success of the Blenheim breeder, J. B. Hickman, in the twp-year-old classes. and Donald Grant and Company of Dannevirke. in the yearling section. Mr Hickman, who is president of the Angus Cattle Breeders’ Association, took both championship and reserve champion-1 ship in the two-year-old classes. ■They realised $3OOO and *92400 !respectively at the sale later in i the day. Both were purchased by Australian buyers. Grant and Cotnpany took the yearling championship with Elomest of Mangators, and the reserve with Prince 16th of Mangatoro. Elomest subsequently won the supreme championship, with Mr Hickman’s two-year-old, Princibet 24th of Taimate, in reserve. The Judge (Mr H. Williams, of Victoria* said he thought the winning yearling was belter balanced than the two-year-old, and on this score, awarded him I the major prize. Over all, he said, the standard of the bulls was very good. The bulls had thickness and excellent bone, and he was impressed, with the length of some of the entries. The yearlings

were more attractive than the two-year-olds. Because of the dominance of • the Angus breed in New Zea- > land, the general standard was probgbly higher than it was in ’ the Australian Angus cattle, j Asked why Australians were ■ buying New Zealand cattle. Mr 1 Williams said some breeders required new blood to breed | more size and scale into their cattle. JEarlier Sale This year’s sale was held two months earlier than usual, but it did not produce a much better clearance. Apart froih the Australian interest, some of the best inquiries came from South Island buyers. Acting for A. S. Bell (Ayles-

ibury), Dalgety, Ltd, of Christchurch purchased Grant and Company's supreme champion yearling at $l7OO. The same agent purchased a two-year-old Edwin Bth of Karaka, from the Parsons partnership (Waitotara) at $lBOO, for R. S. Latter, and another two-year-old, Eudelor of Kilmarnock, from A. J. D. Elliott, of Seddon, at 91600 for Squire Bros, of Waimate. Another four-figure bitll to go io South Canterbury was Purser 3th of Elgin, bred by J L. Duncan, of Hastings. At $lOOO. he was bought fpr E. McConnell. The Gladbrook herd (Middlemarch), offered seven bulls—three tw ( o year olds and four yearlings—and while it was unable to win any prizes in the judging, Australian buyers showed steajly Interest in these cattle, taking three two-year-olds at $9OO to $l4OO, and one yearling at 91600.

As new vendors, Messrs S. L. and B. E. Chambers, of Ellesmere, fared well, their sale entry, a two-year-old, fetching $l9OO.
