INCIDENT AT PARTY

Men Sent For Trial (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 23. Arthur Charles Sims, and Charles James Tarr, two men alleged to have been involved [in an incident in which men jumped from second-storey windows when intruders broke in on a party, were committed for trial after the taking of depositions in the Auckland Magistrate's Court today.

Sims, aged 45. a barman, and Tarr, aged 39, a galvaniser, denied joint charges of injuring Ralph Vincent Hawkes, Terrence Donald Udall. Michael Owen Lyon and David Chambers McKay with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They also denied assaulting Gary Raymond Hyde, Neil Ivan Old. David Chambers McKay, Garth Henry George Irving and Peter Edmond Griffiths, and breaking and entering the flat. Sims also denied assaulting Patricia Jacqueline Johnson. Mr M. J. Beattie appeared for Tarr and Mr G. F. Little for Sims. Sergeant B. L. Pearce prosecuted. On Monday witnesses told the court that a party at a second-storey flat at 21 Valley ■ Road. Mt Eden, was broken up at 2 a.m. on May 3 when four or five men. who had been asked to leave the party earlier, crashed through the door. One of them was welding an axe. Several persons [ jumped out of windows and others suffered gashes and were treated at the hospital.

Hotel Wages

The New Zealand Hotel Workers’ Federation has sent a telegram to the employers asking for a meeting within seven days to open negotiations for interim wage increases. Under the present award, negotiated last October and not due to expire until next January, male and females on, equal pay received increases of 4 per cent, and other female workers gained 5 per cent.
