FORM FOR AVONDALE

(T.A.B. closes 1.15 p.m.) (T.A.B. double closes 12.55 p.m.) 2.25 p.m.— FOLEY MEMORIAL $5000; Ilf. T.A.B. No. 1 2155 PROUD CHIEF (5) 9-2. One of the most successful ■•iron-horses" in New Zealand racing history. Won the Avondale Cup early last season, then added the Rawson Memorial this meeting last year. Good fifth in Te Awamutu Cup last time out and has trained on splendidly. G. Hughes. 2 6210 BLACK CHARM (8) 8-3. Covered extra ground and faded to eleventh at Awapuni last time out after winning there on the first day. Form this winter has been very sound. Must be a prospect, although looked a little light in condition earlier in the week. J. Riordan. 3 8060 FOREBRACE (7) 8-3. Weakened to thirteenth in the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap in last race, but went fast and wide out in middle stages. Ran on for sixth in York Handicap (Im) at previous start. Should be improved by recent racing and although rising 10 years must be given a chance. 4 000 HOHOURBRIGHT (15) 7-11. Drifted to fourteenth at Tauranga last week, but check at crucial stage contributed to this. Over all efforts recently have not been especially good, but, too capable to dismiss just yet. D. Peake. 5 2570 STYLEMAN (3) 7-11. Last raced on May 6 at Trentham and although he is a smart handicap horse he might not be sufficiently seasoned to manage what is bound to be a testing 11 furlongs. P. Kempton. 6 2004 UTAH (1) 7-10. Bold effort for fourth at Tauranga last week in only third outing for the winter. Un-

soundness has prevented him from compiling a better record, but in his present condition he must be given a great chance of scoring his first open-company success. B. Andrews. 7 0000 ALCANTUS (14) 7-9. Finished well back in the Te Awamutu Cup and did not fare much better time before in the A.R.C. Cornwall Handicap. Much more capable than those efforts would suggest and should certainly be improved by latest racing. 8 6940 BLUE WINTER (4) 7-9. Weakened to tenth in the Te Awamutu Cup. Came very good fourth time before in the Cornwall Handicap. Won this race two years ago, then scored again on second day. Looks close to his best and must be a leading fancy. M. Long. 9 9900 GAY COLLEEN (2) 7-9. Well beaten in the Te Awamutu Cup. Comes ,up with odd good effort, such as when she won the Ohinemuri Cup in March, but over-all form not so good. 10 0000 HEAD FANCY (13) 7-8. Not a danger at Tauranga last week. Latest efforts have been pretty moderate and a win would come as a big surprise. B. Compton. 11 0258 THUNDERBALL (16) 7-8. Good eighth in the Te Awamutu Cup in first race for nearly a month. Struck useful form in Autumn and has been running honest races right through. Favours roomy tracks, so should be hard to beat. C. Willetts. 12 6784 TREASURE CASTLE (11) 7-8. Ran on for fourth at Awapuni on June 13 and was running on well in three previous starts, all over shorter distances. Seems on the way back to top form. G. Chitty. 13 1400 DE JULIO (12) 7-7. Finished eleventh after making early pace at Tauranga. Should run on much better if settled back in the field. Good race time before at Te Awamutu and bold showing would not be surprising. K. Reggett. 14 3900 DRACO (6) 7-7. Only

• recent two races have been over shortened journeys. Off the winning list for a long time, but significant that his last two successes were on this course. 15 0000 MICHAEL MOLLOY (17) 7-7. Beat only one at Tauranga last week, but that was first start in nearly a -month so could be improved by it. Not an appealing prospect, however. N. Riordan. 16 0576 RAMLECH (9) 7-7. Solid finish for sixth at Tauranga after two useful efforts at Awapuni. W.R.C. Winter Oats Handicap winner which generally comes to his best about this time of year. Looks big hope. I. Rowe. 17 5320 ROYAL POET (10) 7-7. Except for last-start failure at Rotorua on May 23, he has raced consistently well this year, but mostly in

high-weight class. Hardly likely to upset this field. (T.A.B. closes 2.35 p.m.) 3.45 p.m.— PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, $3000; 6f. TAB. Nos. 1 4123 CHOUCUANA (9) 9-4. High-class galloper having her first start since she came third behind Loofah in weight-for-age Woodstock Stakes at Te Awamutu last December. Usually comes up quickly and must be considered. K. Cullen. 2 1840 CAMBRIDGE FAIR (14) 8- Faded in the Te Awamutu Cup last start. Much better as sprinter and although this is drop of four furlongs from previous race, should be respected. B. Cullen. 3 0545 DASHING LU (2) 8-8. Ran honest races without much reward at the Great Northern carnival. Generally runs well on this course and, in fact, came second in this race last year under 9- At good position in weights for one of her class. G. McLiesh. 4 6166 GOLD HEIGHTS (8) 8-8. Disappointing when sixth last start, at Te Awamutu, and sixth at Ellerslie time before. Capable of much better and should be given a further chance. G. Edge. I 5 0042 LADY DEFENCE (12) i : 8-8. Real course specialist, having won six races there including this one last year. Looked to be coming back to best when fourth and second at Great Northern meeting. Big chance. K. Reggett. 6 FOXVALE (13) 8-7. Top-flight galloper having first start since August, 1968. In training looks to be completely recovered from injury which kept him off the scene for so long. Should, however require the race. 7 4681 SECOND CHANCE (10) 8-6. Won very well at Tauranga last week. Seldom runs a bad race and in her present form should go well again. B. Andrews. 8 5320— BRYLEE (3) 8-2. Did not get best of runs last start, at Te Awamutu. Earlier form was promising and he should be one of the hardest to beat. G. Alexander. 9 1115 MR SOVEREIGN (1) 8-1. Gallant fifth under 9-4 in hacks at Tauranga last week. This wil be first open-com-pany start but from place in weights and No. 1 at the start, should give good account of himself. D. Weatherley. 10 2353 MONANDER (11) 8-1. Form right through season has been very sound. Came third at Te Awamutu last time out and ran good races at Ellerslie before-hand. G. Willetts. II 0030 SUNWARM (4) 8-1. Ran very poorly at Tauranga, a performance that mystified her trainer. Was very good third at Ellerslie the time before and worked in best style on Tuesday. Should be given another chance. D. Peake. 12 0 BIG BEAU (5) 8-0. Last raced January, 1969, and although working quite well others make more appeal. J. Waterson. 13 8000 MARKABLE (7) 8-0. Has been out of form for a long time. Very smart earlier in career and has generally raced well on this course. 14 6009 SUREVE (6) 8-0. Another which has been off the winning list for a considerable period. Should be safely held.
