TROTTING False Square, General Idea Impressive

False Square and General Idea suggested that they would be two of the major winners next season when they formed the successful T.A.B. double combination at the Rangiora winter meeting on Saturday.

False Square’s RangiCun win woo u- r X nis nitil tor the season and it stamped him as one of the most promis- ; n „ avers nmnncr the it,,-I-,™ intermediate-class four-year-olds. False Square was, as usual,

a Shade slow away, but he recovered fairly quickly and his West Melton ownertrainer, L. G. Thomas, settled him down in eighth position early. He sprinted him up with nine furlongs left and ne moved quickly into second place on the ou t s y e o f Dollar Man, just behind the pacemaker, Moody Patch.

False Square applied the pressure to Moody Patch before the half mile and the pacemaker soon succumbed, leaving False Square clear at the three furlongs. Almost immediately he was joined by Royal Step and Khandallah and they raced to the straight in line, with Young Warwick, Young Miss, Monarrg, and

Flying Tutta (very wide) almost in line next, ahead of John Charles, which was starting to make ground after being pushed to the tail of the field at the three furlongs. With a furlong left False Square had shaken off his closest rivals and his superior stamina carried him to the line with a length and a quarter to spare.

Monarrg, which had every chance, challenged gamely along the inner to take second by two lengths from Flying Tutta, which showed speed after a rather slow start. Young Warwick was close up, clear of Young Miss, which shaded John Charles and Royal Step, with the others struggling home at intervals. By Fallacy General Idea, which like False Square is a son of Fallacy, had to produce an effort above average to win the Eyreton Handicap. He became badly placed some five lengths back on the inner and it was close to the straight entrance before R. P. Nyhan extricated him. Once properly in the open he unwound a most determined run which carried him up to Manawaru 50 yards out and he came on to beat that runner by a length and a half going away. Raced in partnership by his Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald, and Mr W. Toomey, of Christchurch, General Idea heralded an early win when he beat all but Boy Friend in the Queen’s Birthday Stakes at Ashburton on June 1. Manawaru, after looking all over a winner starting the last furlong, was not disgraced as he was slow away and then attempted to lead over the final three furlongs. Rain Again added interest to the finish by coming from nearly last starting the final quarter to finish a neck behind Manawaru with Geoff’s Gilft, Volo Dor and Willow Brae close by.
