N.Z., CANADA 1-1 IN TENNIS Cramp Forces Parun To Default Match

The New Zealand tennis champion, O. Parun, was helped off the court, suffering from cramp, and his singles match was defaulted, in the second round of the American zone Davis Cup contest with Canada on Saturday.
B. E. Fairlie had given New Zealand a spectacular start to the tie by outplaying the Canadian No. 1, M. Belkin, in straight sets, but the mishap to Parun allowed Canada to level the contest at 1-1 after the ’opening singles. ■ Parun suffered cramp in the right leg in the fifth and de-

He had not recovered I and the team manager, Mr E. D. White, defaulted. Parun’s - scores in the first four sets were 2-6, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. INFLUENZA VICTIM Mr White said he hoped Parun would be fit for the doubles, but if not he would use the 19-year-old J. Simpson in partnership with Fairlie. He said that Parun had had influenza earlier in the week and it left him in a weakened condition. “He was gone in the first set,” Mr White added. Fairlie, who was 22 on Friday, overwhelmed Belkin, 6-4. ,6-2, 64, in a performance similar to his defeat of the Canadian in the Oklahoma [open tournament two weeks lago. He won fair and square and didn’t let the crowd get to him.” In European zone ties on Saturday, Russia beat Czechoslovakia, 3-2, West Germany took a winning, 3-0, lead over Belgium, Spain led France. 3-0, and Rumania was 2-1 against Jugoslavia. In Moscow, J. Kukal levelled the tie with his 3-6. 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, defeat of T. Lejus, but the Russian, A. Metreveli. then beat the French open champion, J. Kodes, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the deciding match.
