Queensland played delightful Rugby in its speedy back line to score two great tries for a 10-0 lead after only 15 minutes, but from that point, the team's form declined and over the last 10 minutes it was hard pressed ;to retain its advantage. j Queensland, however, looked I the better team, with greater polish to its movements, but Nelson Bays still had plenty of • chances to win.

Taranaki, on the other hand, lifted its play in a mighty effort to outplay New South Wales in the battle for possession. While individual players had their moments, the New South Wales backs failed to function as a unit, and only once in the whole (match did the ball reach the big centre, S. Knight, from set i Play. Scores Even

The scores were 9-9 at halftime. after a bright first spell in which the recalled Taranaki back, K. Hurley, kicked three penalty goals to two penalty goals and a try by New South Wales. The second half saw the match slow considerably, as Taranaki won line-out after (line-out but kept kicking the ball into touch. The high point of the match came with 10 minutes to go. The Taranaki captain and former All Black, M. Wills, who played a devastating match on the end of the Taranaki lineout, snatched the ball from a line-out ruck and swerved his (way 30 yards to score. The try was converted. Nelson Match In the Nelson match, the offform goal-kicking by the Nelson full-back, T. Morris, proved expensive, and several promising movements were spoiled by faulty handling. The lively Queenslanders

looked an extremely fine side during the first half, with a lot of thrust supplied in mid-field by A. Pope and C. Woodward. Both wings, J. McLean and K. Donald, ran powerfully. McLean’s opening try of the' match was a gem. There was much untidy play among the forwards, where Queensland clearly dominated the line-outs. But in the second half. Nelson Bays set up a series of powerful forward rushes. For Queensland. McLean and Donald scored tries. McLean converted two, and R. McKay, drop-kicked a goal.

For Nelson Bays, J. Chadwick. C. Cochrane and T. Mitchell scored tries.
