Gurney (United States) won the front-row positions on Saturday for the opening event in the rich Can-Am road racing series, as tragedy struck the Mosport Park circuit on the I eve of the race. , R. Brown, a 40-year-old . part-time driver from the , United States, was killed . when his car was wrecked - during the final practice sest sion. Brown’s Avocet-Chev-rolet left the course and i rolled over, pinning the . driver beneath. Hulme, who has won the : Can-Am twice, was clocked at ,- Imin 17.6 sec on his fastest ■ lap of the’ circuit, in his ■ new McLaren MBO-Chevrolet. His speed was 115.52 miles . an hour. ii Gurney replaced the late Bruce McLaren in the Brit- :; ish-based McLaren team. He (drove a lap of Imin 18sec for .second place on the grid, his speed being 113.49 miles an I hour. I
