Rocket Blast Fails

PARIS, June 12.
The European Launcher Development Organisation’s three-stage Europa rocket failed to put an Italian-built satellite into orbit today, E.L.D.O. sources reported in Paris.
The first two stages of the Eurpoa, launched from the Australian Woomera desert rocket range, functioned successfully, but the third stage, which carried the satellite, apparently failed. Australian reports, quoting E.L.D.O.’s Australian representative (Colonel Jesse Dutton), said that the West German third stage had ignited successfully, but it was not known if it had developed enough thrust to inject the satellite into orbit. A British Blue Streak first stage and a French Coralie second stage worked smoothly, according to official Australian reports. The launching was the tenth test of the three-stage rocket, and the last before E.L.D.O. moves its space programme to French Guinea.
