Superintendent Of Tunnel
The superintendent of the Lyttelton Road Tunnel (Mr W. A. Wheldale) has been appointed deputy head of operations of the new West Gate toll bridge in Melbourne.
The bridge, which will have an ultimate capacity of 200,000 vehicles a day in 10 lanes, is due for completion
in about 12 months at a cost of $42 million plus $lB million for the approaches. Mr Wheldale was appointed superintendent of the Lyttelton Tunnel before it was opened seven years ago. He came to the position from the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Mr Wheldale will take up his new position next October. The West Gate Bridge is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the world. It is 8000 ft long and will span the lower Yarra River at Fishermen’s Bend. The bridge is the cable-stay girder type, 176 ft high, with the girder pylons another 150 ft high. ' When in use the bridge will have television cameras to watch the traffic flows and enable breakdown vehicles to remove stoppages as quickly as possible.
