City Rubbish Collection
Sir,—Anzac Day, with its parades, ceremonies, and colourful wreaths, conveys a wealth of meaning to the citizens of Christchurch. The War Memorial is appropriately situated in the heart of the city, and is the focal point for those with memories of two World Wars, Why. is it then that along all streets leading to this point the footpaths are allowed to remain dotted with garbage receptacles? Cans with lids, cans without lids, paper bags sprawling on the pavement, spewing out their contents, broken cartons spilling rubbish into the street to be scattered by the. wind. The obvious tourists with colour cameras would not have wasted film on what they saw in Hereford Street or any other street of the inner city. Why cannot the heart Of the
“Garden City” be kept in tune with this proud title?— Yours, etc., AGGRIEVED CITIZEN. Apirl 26, 1970.
[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “Apart from a service provided to some hotels and hospitals, no refuse collection is made on Saturdays, and similar arrangements prevailed on Anzac Day. To avoid traffic-
congested streets, refuse collection in the central city area commences each week day at 6.45 a.m., when seven trucks are used in an endeavour to clear the area by 8.30 a.m. This means that business premises have either to put their tins out early on Monday, forgo the Monday collection, or leave them out for the week-end. Regarding the type of container used, it should be emphasised that the council has approved both regulation bins to N.Z.S.S. 308 and multiwall wet-strength paper sacks, while cartons are acceptable if flattened and tied in neat bundles. The council is currently considering a report on refuse, including the matters raised by the correspondent.”]
