Heating—for grass
A heating system is to be installed under the turf at the main stadium to be used for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. At a depth of lOin a total length of 12 miles of pipe, through which warm water can be pumped, is to be laid. The heating plant will be able to cope with frost and even with sudden heavy falls of snow during the European winter so that the turf will be in first-class order for the Games. Consideration is also being given to covering the grass during the winter to prevent it becoming too soft. The Olympic planners are also taking precautions against a long, hot summer. An automatic subsoil irrigation system will ensure that the grass in the stadium is not dried out by the sun.
Artificial lawns will not be used at Munich.
