Fairweather on top
The 1969 New Zealand colt representative, J. Fairweather (Checkers), already has a commanding individual points lead after four rounds in the Canterbury A grade men’s basketball championship competition. The 6ft 4in centre has 92 points and seems likely to break the century long before the end of the first round.
His nearest challenger is another first-year senior, G. Phillips (Rangiora), who has 61. Other leading scorers are: R. Spark (Rangiora) 59, R. Dew (Checkers) and R. McCormack (Burnham) 53 (equal), A. Hounsell (Old Boys) 49, B. Borrell
(Rangiora) 46, K. Hessell (University) 45, The leading scorer in the supplementary competition after three rounds is B. Young (Mid Canterbury) with 30. Another Mid Canterbury player, K. Beach, is second on 27 with two Checkers players, L. Haysom (26) and M. Robb (23) close behind.
