BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Sir Alan Danks has been chairman of the University; Grants Committee since 1966. He is widely known as anj economist, public speaker,) broadcaster and writer on current events. He spent practically the whole of his career (from 1943 to 1966) in the economics department of the University of Canterbury. He graduated from the university, master of arts with equivalent first-class honours in economics in 1938. After a brief period as a teacher he joined the economics department in 1943 and in 1962 was appointed professor of economics. In 1964 he became Pro-Viee-Chancellor of the university.
