Cabdrivers’ Book Is Closed
“The World of Beachcomber” will screen on two more Sundays from CHTV3, but for many viewers it will not be the same without Sir Michael Redgrave’s masterly recital from the book of the Huntingdonshire Cabdrivers. It ended last Sunday, accompanied by tears from Spike Milligan. It was a piece of zany humour that surely will live. Who will forget the huge empty stage, the entry of the splendid figure of Sir Michael Redgrave, his arrival at the lectern, the removal of reading glasses from the breast pocket, the glance around, the opening of- the book, and then the mellifluous recital, every vowel and consonant clearly enunciated,: of that mixture of run-of-the-mill and bizarre names. Some have said it was all a waste of Sir Michael Redgrave’s talent; but it was the type of thing that needed a name and personality as big as his to carry it off.
