Levy Suggested For Local Body Finance

(New Zealand Press Association)

TIMARU, June 12.

Permissive legislation to enable territorial local bodies to levy their communities for additional funds if these were required was a solution to local body finance given by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) when he spoke to the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night.

He rejected completely any suggestion that the Government should add local body financing to its tax structure

“The Government has enough problems.” he said “Local bodies, like hospital boards, would spend the money as fast as they could and then blame the Government when they ran short. “This would not be a good principle." The Minister advised that

local bodies should devise plans for their area and finance them from within their area, although this would create problems in the bigger cities. “What we could do in the Government is bring out permissive legislation for local bodies to levy further on their local people if they ha

not got enough money,” he said.
