By using only P.B. and Avonlea sires the flock was kept to straight P.B. blood for many years. Recently Rams of predominantly P.B. blood have been used, together with Kentish Downs G 2-65 (Imp. Australia) and a further purchase P.B. X 44-67. AVONLEA SHEEP have won numerous prizes and Championships at Shows throughout New Zealand. In 1967 the coveted Cup presented by S.D. Soc. of England for best S.D. Ram at N.Z. Royal Show was won outright after 4 previous wins in 1958, 1959, 1962 and 1964. The Branksome Cup (most points S.D. Section Royal Show) was won in 1965. Ram Hoggets have won many classes and as Shearling Rams met keen competition at leading Stud Fairs in New Zealand. LEA-AVON ROMNEY STUD was founded in 1962 with Leedstown Ewes—over 70 being purchased in the first 3 years. Firstly, only Leedstown sires and recently only rams carrying mainly Leedstown Blood have been used. Considerable successes at Royal Shows and Stud Fairs have been attained. The Supreme Royal Champion Romney Ewe in 1964 and the Sir William Perry Gold Cup for best woolled Romney in 1965 have been major achievements.
