Sir Stanley Rous, president of the International Football revealed yesterday that the referee for the World Cup match between Uruguay and Sweden on Thursday had been changed at the last minute after allegations of attempted bribery. The referee, Mr Airton De Moraes, of Brazil, was replaced by an American, Mr Henry Landauer. Sir Stanley Rous said in an official statement that the allegations were being investigated.
Mr De Moraes had denied that illegal approaches had been made to him, Sir Stanley Rous said, but he agreed that it would be in his interests not to referee the match.
