COLD FACTORIES AND HOMES
Many centrally-heated homes, factories and business premises in Canterbury are expected to run out
of oil for their furnaces before Tuesday. The oil tanks for private homes usually contain enough for about two weeks, and to avoid uneconomic running the oil companies do not send their tankers out until near the end of the fortnight. Several hundred homes in Christchurch, alone were due to have their tanks refilled yesterday, and with normal winter use many of these would run dry by Monday. To conserve fuel, several of the largest factories in the district have reduced heating and cut down on overtime and night work: and representatives say their position will be critical if the drivers’ strike is not settled by Tuesday.
