Slow Renewal Of Licences
i Christchurch drivers are renewing their driving licences at a much slower rate than last year.
By 5 p.m. yesterday only 9400 licences had been renewed at the Ministry of Transport office in Manchester Street. At the comparable time last year 15,000 had been processed. By last Friday 6000 licences were renewed, and only 3400 have been renewed this week. The officer in charge of the section (Mr H. Turner) said that at no stage had the staff had to work to capacity. Waiting time for drivers was down to a minimum and the department had facilities to cope with far more. Mr Turner expects that by the end of the month about 24,000 drivers will have renewed their licences, leaving 6000 to be dealt with next month. He was unable to suggest why renewals had been so slack. His section would be open until 8 p.m. on the next two Friday nights.
