OFFER OF LENSES

WELLINGTON, June 11. The All Black, B. D. M. Furlong, said in Wellington tonight that he would try contact lenses while playing in South Africa if they were offered to him by a South African petroleum company, as reported. An N.Z.P.A.-Reuter message from Johannesburg said that Furlong, who is short-sighted, wears spectacles off the field but cannot afford to buy contact lenses for matches. A Johannesburg newspaper reported that Furlong is so short-sighted he cannot read the scoreboard when on the field.
A spokesman for the company Trek Petroleumsaid: “We are prepared to buy him a set If he still hasn’t got one when he arrives here. We will have a representative' at the airport to meet him and arrange for a fitting.” Furlong normally wears spectacles because of Short, sightedness, but he said tonight that he did not wear contact lenses on the playing field.
